Witrand

Ikalafeng

Ikalafeng is a school in the Ikageng area of Potchefstroom for children with special needs. It is a NWU Project. These children have either a mental disability or a physical disability. The children are between the ages of 7 and 18 years old. The educational part of the school, only goes as high as grade 4 mentally. They educate the children according to the speed the children are able to learn and according to the curriculum they are able to understand the best. There are approximately 200 children that stay in the school’s hostel. The school provides 3 meals a day for the children in the hostel. There is an autistic and severe mental disability class that is currently being renovated for these children. They have their own needs that go with their own curriculum as they learn at a much slower speed than the other children in the school. The school is looked after quite well and no need for infrastructure to be done, they only need educational stuff and small activities that will uplift these children while in school. The liaisons person for this school is Mr Lappies and he makes sure that the school is maintained. The children prefer Setswana communication, however Mr Lappies prefers Afrikaans as a form of communication. The three biggest needs at the project is to upgrade the sandpit, paint the pavement for the playground and to upgrade the jungle gym for the SID children.

Tshwaraganang

Tshwaraganang is a fixed project of the NWU and is based in the Potchefstroom community, Ikageng. It is a day-care center for disabled children. The main language used for communication is English. The person to contact at the project is Amelia. Some of the staff members are volunteers, therefore, they don’t earn a salary. Tshwaraganang receives a small stipend from the government each month, but it isn’t enough to cover all the salaries of the staff. Tshwaraganang currently has about 19 children. The age groups vary between 3 and 18 years old. Tshwaraganang wants to relocate in the near future to a building that is owned by them. Tshwaraganang is currently in an old factory, where the infrastructure needs a lot of attention. They have a kitchen, one bathroom, one office, a playroom where the children spend most of their time, and 2 storage units where they store the extra wheelchairs and other things. They have access to the back of the factory; this is where we usually have wheelchair aksies. They have a little bus that picks up the children and drops them off in the afternoons. This bus can also be used for expeditions and to buy food. The children receive 2 meals per day, which mostly consists of cereal and vegetables that they can afford. The daycare has a ball pit and a cupboard full of toys. There is a wide variety of disabilities. It varies from cerebral palsy to a blind child to a child that cannot talk. The caregivers don’t have full knowledge about the disabilities and don’t always know what to do with the children but they do their best to give the children the best possible stimulation. For the term 2021/2022 the biggest needs at Tshwaraganang are 1. Infrastructure needs at the new building they want to relocate, 2. Wheelchair (specifically one), 3. Teacher training and 4. Educational toys.

Growing Trees

Growing trees is a kindergarten with 13 children between the ages of 2 to 5 years old. The school is coordinated by Mme Shiela, the teacher at Growing trees. Even though the children mainly know Tswana, and only a small amount of English, Mme Shiela, the teacher, is fluent in both, with a little bit of understanding for Afrikaans. Growing trees is located in Ikageng, a suburb bordering Potchefstroom. Unfortunately, Growing trees does not have the funding to stay functional and thus needs the support of an external supporter. Laureus men’s residence have been assigned to the project in order to help, improve, and sustain the project. The term 2022 is Laureus’s fifth term collaborating with Growing trees. For the term of 2022 the three biggest needs identified is the infrastructure, food, and safety of the kids. By fulfilling these needs, we are able to ensure the children at Growing trees are growing up in an environment where they can feel safe and happy. The school opens at 8 AM in the mornings and closes at 4 PM when the children are going home. The school is furnished with a mattress for each child (individual), warm oven for the cold winters, and a sandpit and play area for the children. Over the last 4 years Growing trees have grow on the residents of Laureus the sneaked into our hearts. The children are full of live, love, and wonder and lights up every time you make a visit. There is nothing in the world that a Laureus resident would trade for that feeling.

Geesteswetenskap

The Student Academic Chapter for the Faculty of Humanities for the nwu will function as a liaison project throughout the term. Assisting in all fixed projects the chapter will be a direct link between faculty students and SRCS. As a faculty that hosts study aspects of human society and culture, this enables us to serve communities more diligently with a broadened understanding of today's socioeconomic issues.

Ingenieurswese

The Engineering Faculty of the NWU project focuses on uniquely serving the community, original to our skills. We aim to assist the local community using our analytical, problem solving and practical skills, whether that is in construction, project management or academic assistance. Furthermore, we plan to create a society amongst the engineering students where they can participate in community services and first-hand experience their importance in socio-economic issues, ultimately creating such an impact that the students will continue supporting the country’s people even after university.

Regte

Since the student academic chapter is Law related, I will help the community out with any law related events. I need to teach the community about rules and regulations so that they shouldn’t go against the law. I would also have to teach smaller children legal rules like robots, traffic signs so that they can also be legal abiding citizens when they’re older. I need to use the three legs of SRCS.The first which is sustainability will be created when the community can look back at an event and still gain knowledge from it. The second leg is awareness. With reference to this , I would like to make the community aware about our law and how to avoid penalties like imprisonment or fines. Lastly with reference to empowerment I would like to educate all individuals about being better Law abiding citizens

Natuur -en Landbouwetenskappe

Community service is work done by a person or group of people that benefits others. It is often done near the area where you live, so your own community reaps the benefits of your work. Community service can help any group of people in need: children, senior citizens, people with disabilities and also animals who are basically in shelters. SRCS is basically the role done in community services. The Student Rag Community Service is a student driven non-profit organization of the North-West University that is actively involved in socio-economic development of communities within this area. The students come up with ideas or events which could benefit the community. While doing the community service we need to make sure we consider the three important legs of SRCS which are Empowerment, Sustainability and Awareness. Meaning the projects that are going to be done by students needs to empower the people, it can be learners, youth or old people with the necessary knowledge, skill or confidence which can help them become the best version of themselves. Projects should last longer to benefit people for a long run and also make people to be on lookout for community engagement.

Gesondheidwetenskappe

Health Sciences is the application of sciences to health, including the study of medicine, nutrition, and a broad spectrum of medical-related topics. The faculty of Health Sciences of the NWU has a long and proud tradition of excellence in the training of health professionals from all the different types of aspects to ensure that they are well equipped. The Health Sciences Chapter does not have a specific established project. I intend on growing strong networks and liaising with the respective Project Leaders, Residences, and fellow Academic Chapters. I hope to assist them in achieving their desired results in ensuring that they fulfil their identified needs with our given resources.

Opvoedkunde

The faculty of Education is known as Educo. Even if we do not have a permanent project and are linked to other initiatives, we as a diverse faculty can offer a wide range of services and abilities to guarantee that we have a significant influence. We aim to cooperate with other SACs, HCs, and Project Leaders to combine our resources and guarantee that we have a greater impact on the following groups: kindergartens, nursing homes, hospitals, animals, the environment, schools, and vulnerable people. The SAC member will be required to participate in a total of five programs which are leadership, environmental awareness, academic growth, educational empowerment, and motor skills. A minimum of two events each week should be scheduled by each SAC. Pinterest might help you come up with event ideas if you are struggling.

Agape

Dus is daar tans geen kindertjies by Agape nie.

Pick a Leader Resolofetse

Pick-A-Leader Resolofetse is a project by the NWU, which is centred on the development of the leadership skills and characteristics of grade 9, 10, and 11 learners from Resolofetse Secondary School. Resolofetse Secondary School is a High School that is located in Ikageng Potchefstroom. The project works with a group of about 60 learners aged between 15 and 17 that have been selected by the teachers and the liason person, Mr. Karabo Matebesi, to take part in the project. The learners taking part in the project are equipped with knowledge and skills that allows them to learn more about themselves and their environment. The learners are also challenged to dream big and broaden their horizons, and they are also taught about the value and ethic of hard work and how important it is in the pursuit of all the goals they have set out for themselves. The main language of communication at the project is English; and this is because development of the learners’ literacy and comprehension in English is one the needs for this term. Other needs of importance this term is addressing the infrastructure needs such as fixing broken windows and door handles to create a safe and secure learning environment for the learners; another important need is to help develop and educate the learners’ on good health and hygiene practices.

Pick-a-leader Botoka

Pick-a-Leader Botoka is an NWU-owned community service project that aimed at raising the leaders of tomorrow. The project will take place at Botoka Secondary School in the small township of Ikageng. The learners that will take part in this project are grade 8 to 11 learners between the ages of 14 and 17. There are 82 learners in total, and they form part of the Student Representative Council. Apart from the learners, there is also a liaison person involved, Mr. Pheto, he is one of the teachers in the school. Mr. Pheto plays a role in determining the learners that will be part of the project and also acts as a link between the school and all those involved in the project. This project is based on teaching the learners what being a leader entails in various aspects of life such as the physical aspects, spiritual aspects, and more. The learners will be communicated to in English. The biggest needs of the project include leadership development, cognitive development and specific learning apparatus. What makes this project unique is that it does not just provide physical needs but it is a project based on psychological and intellectual development in terms of leadership, and above all provides knowledge that the learners can hold on to for as long as they would choose.

Hospitaal Projek

The Hospital Project located at the Potchefstroom Hospital, has the hearts, and needs of all patients that reside in the paediatric ward as our top priority. The age of these children range from a couple months up until the age of 12. There are around 25-35 patients at the ward at any given time most only speaking Setswana. Fortunately, our coordinator can speak and help with translation, she spends her days at the hospital providing ample support to these kids. Because this hospital is a public one, not all of the needs of these children can be met, it is thus why this project has been established. They have everything they need on a medical level, but things on an entertainment and education level are severely lacking. The top 3 needs that need to be addressed are the following: 1. Lack of entertainment: we need to collect toys and a secure place to store them 2. Lack of educational things: books, posters, toys, etc. 3. Lack of hygiene products: soap, facecloths, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc. We are striving to make the environment of the hospital less gloom by giving the kids something fun to do and draw their attention away from the medical problems they are facing. They spend most of their days do nothing and losing out on important education. These are kids that are being strong for their families, so this project gives them someone to be strong for them. Which makes this one of the best projects SRCS has to offer.

President Pretorius

President Pretorius is a primary school situated in Potchefstroom. It is a dual medium school, but our projects will only be presented in English. The project is funded by NWU and falls underneath SRCS projects. The project focuses on 2 LSOB classes consisting of about 15 children per class, varying in age from 12-13. The students struggle with cognitive development problems which influence their reading and writing abilities. The children are not aware of much beyond their everyday environment; thus, life skills and world knowledge are a problem. The school struggle with problems such as respect and bullying. We will be focusing on educating the students on verbal bullying and respect. Teaching them life skills and ensuring that they are more aware of how to make use of sanitary and hygiene products. The urge for more outside activities is essential as the student’s love forming one with Mother Earth. The liaison person is teacher Hessie. We will be working alongside her ensuring we achieve action against our 3 mine needs, bullying, life skills and reading development.

Sand,see en skulp

Sand, Sea and Shell is a NWU-owned project where 24 selected grade two learners (8-year-olds) from Promosa Primary School, located in Promosa, Potchefstroom, get the opportunity of a lifetime to go on their first trip to the beach. The school is both English and Afrikaans. The goal of the project is to prepare the children both physically and emotionally to allow them to enjoy the trip, as well as to teach them valuable life lessons which they can then use for the rest of their lives. The liaison person, Francesca Jonkers, will select twelve girls and twelve boys to take part in this project. Mrs. Jonkers will be closely involved with the project throughout the year, as she will work with the children and help us to prepare them with actions throughout the year. The preparation for the project includes a series of actions and events that will prepare the children for the trip by teaching them about sea animals, teaching them to swim and teaching them about hygiene, manners, environmental awareness, leadership, and Christianity. We will especially focus on the three main needs of the children, namely infrastructure in the classroom and on the schoolgrounds, hygiene and discipline. Twenty-four guardians are selected, and they will each be responsible for one child during the trip. They will be involved in many activities during the vacation. The vacation will be packed with fun activities for the children, such as days spent on the beach, going out to a restaurant and waterparks. A challenge that will likely arise during this trip is that the children will get attached to their guardians. To avoid this there will be a set of rules and boundaries for the guardians to follow. Sand, Sea and Shell is a very special project because the children get to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the beach for the very first time. There they will make memories that they can cherish for the rest of their lives. They will also learn valuable lessons in preparation for the trip, that will help them for the rest of their lives. This project is a life-changing adventure for everyone involved.

Mohadine Primary

Mpheng Mahlale Day Care Centre

Mpheng Mahlale Day Care Centre is a Pre-school project of the NWU that Veritas Men’s residence has helped for the past 5 years and accommodates children between the ages of 3-6 and has about 40 children. This preschool is located in Ikageng and has basic needs like infrastructure (net for shade, water and electricity), having little to none chairs and desks and building a jungle gym, that need to be met in order to make the school better for the children, teachers and the community as a whole. The liaison persons name is miss Lucy and plays a vital role in the development of the children. She is actively part of their life and plays a key role. Languages that is being accommodated at the project is both English and Tswana. What makes this project special is the fact that the teachers are friendly and that makes a difference on the children’s lives as well, it is astonishing.

Perdry projek

Juffrou Riekie is Afrikaans spreekend.

Lethabo

Lethabo Day Care is a pre-primary school located in Ikageng, Potchefstroom. Huis Republiek Ladies residence is privileged enough to be part of this project for the past 3 years. The school has 2 teachers and 30-35 children from the age of 0-6 years old. The liaison person at the project is Maserame, and she is also one of the teachers at the school. This school falls under the early childhood development category. The teachers and children mainly communicate with each other in Tswana and English. The biggest needs of this project basically focus on infrastructure to relocate the school. If we are unable to relocate the school the main needs will be a to better the condition of the current school's infrastructure , to get chairs and desks for the school as well as matrasses for the children to rest on. This project is close to our hearts, and throughout the years we as the HC members of SRCS built a bond with the teacher and the children. They always smile when they see us, and always know that we are there to empower them and to make their day better. They always sing nursery Christian songs for us, and we can see that the teacher and the children really embrace God’s love and grace for them.

Pudulogo

Heide has Pudulogo Primary School in the Ikageng area as a SRCS project. At the school we work with the +- 127 grade 1 learners between the ages of 6 and 8. The contact person at our project is Lydia, her role is to be the link between myself and the grade 1 teachers to ensure that there isn’t a communication gap. This is the 3rd term we have this project, we have had it since 2020. The language that most of the learners use is Tswana, we communicate in English to the teachers and they then help us to effectively communicate with the learners. For this term the biggest needs are as follow: To improve the sport skills the learners have, to equip the classrooms better (posters, English skills improvement), to improve the math skills of the learners. Our project is unique because we do not speak the same language as the learners but we are still able to learn so much from them and to them, we also have the opportunity to work with a very large group of learners compared to other projects. It is very noteworthy to see how quickly the learners can learn something new even though we do not speak the same language, the project also satisfied a lot of their needs which shows that the are truly empowered.

Jonathan Jacob

Jonathan Jacob, is a liaison project of the NWU that offers the improvement of management traits and capabilities of learners and adults of their community. This liaison project calls for running hand-in-hand with different SRCS mission leaders, the office Student Interests and Development `Leave-a-legacy, colleges in addition to HCs and SACs. Its essential consciousness is on growing management capabilities of beginners in neighborhood disadvantaged colleges with the aid of using conveying those capabilities in phrases of traits and character traits. It involves assisting youngsters with their problem-fixing capabilities, attractive them in management video games which in flip allows them higher control strain and conflicts round them.

Promosa 1

Promosa 1, a project of the NWU, is located in Blommetjie Street, Potchefstroom, more specifically Promosa and consists of 8 Grade 1 classes, meaning 250 learners in total. These children, all aged between 6 and 8, are loving, friendly and so deserving of support and attention. The contact person for this project is Gladys Gerber who is a teacher at Promosa 1. Communication at the project is in Afrikaans as well as English. Some aspects that need to be fulfilled in this term are infrastructure needs, this includes seating areas for the children as well as making the school feel more homely by decorating the environment. Secondly a big need is under garments for the girls as well as stationary. Further enriching the children’s education through cognitive, creative and spiritual development is a very important point to focus on. Creating a foundation for the children onto which they can build is integral to the project. What makes this project special is the loving nature of the children and the opportunity for growth, not only in their lives but at their school, Promosa 1.

Promosa 3

Evangelisasie

Spreading the gospel, which can be known as evangelism, is important to Jesus. Jesus wants everyone to know and celebrate His truth, so that they can form part of God’s holy kingdom. Evangelism means preaching, announcing, and communicating the gospel, our salvation and making heaven crowded. In John 3:16 we are told, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” And in John 14:6 we read, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” It’s delivering the message that Jesus Christ is not only the Son of God, but also gave His life as a sacrifice for our sins. In doing so, He ensured eternal life for anyone who believes. Accepting this good news and telling others about it, is the definition of evangelism. Evangelism satisfies spiritual needs in the community.

Bogatlhamela Masisi

The name 'Bogatlhamela Masisi' means Fearless Woman. Bogatlhamela Masisi is a liaison project of the NWU, run by a female for females. The project ensures to empower and educate girls and women in the community. The main focus of the project is to meet basic needs in the community, by providing sanitary products and health education.

Hope of Glory

Minjonet’s is assigned to Hope of Glory which is a project of the NWU. It is located in Ikageng in Potchefstroom on the grounds of Apostlic Faith Mission Emmanuel. This is a nursery school with plus/minus 100 learners from the age of three months old up until six years old. Dinah Shay Halaz is the founder and principal. They give the children food every day and give them lessons to develop their skills and development. The children are exposed to English and Setswana in this school. The biggest needs are infrastructure in the form of a shade net, motor skills and educational toys and things. In general the project focuses on helping the children and babies develop and grow. This project is special because it works with vulnerable children that are growing and need Minjonet’s help to develop effectively.

Rekopane Creche

Rekopane Créche Primary School located in Hessi, is a hidden treasure that Vergeet-My-Nie Ladies Residence received 3 years ago with much gratefulness with the motive to uplift, treasure, love and support. The liason person’s name is Celine Makopo and she is the head teacher at the school. The school is next to Celine’s house, which makes a big difference because she is 24/7 available for the little ones for any emergency or need. The school consists out of a small neglected building without any water or a bathroom on the premises. There are currently 19 children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years. Their preferred language for SRCS interactions is Setswana. Our project is unique, since they have no curriculum, playground or matrasses for the children to sleep on, but the school still tries its best to stimulate and develop the children to the best of their abilities. Each morning, they come running to Celine with a big smile, open arms and excitement for the day, regardless of the challenges set before them. They also face other challenges like cooking twice a day for the children without an oven, microwave or stove that works perfectly. The neglected infrastructure is one of their biggest needs. The school is also growing in size, but the classroom capacity does not allow it, since the school only consists out of one small classroom and a tiny kitchen.

Precious Pearls

Precious Pearls is ‘n kleuterskooltjie vol potensiaal in Promosa.

Paballo Kleuterskool

Project description; Paballo nursery school is a daycare nursery school located in the Ikageng area and it usually consisted of 30 toddlers, but due to Covid-19 and its impact, the school only has 16 learners left. This is a very small project compared to other residences' projects and there is not much space for the learners. The children's ages range from a few months old to 6 years old. Developments in the school are, for example, the “Wendy-house” that was built in place of the corrugated iron sheets and these are our latest developments on which we will continue to build and improve with small to large improvements around and in the school building itself. Eikenhof has had Paballo day care as our project for 4 years and so the nursery school is able to meet its last needs in the term. There is no fencing that can protect the children in the school or the teachers. There is very little grass and not much of a play area. There is only one classroom for all the children of all the different ages and the bathroom will ned a step for the children to be able to reach the toilet. There is not much shade for the hot summer days and not much blankets for those cold winters days (together with the holes in the floor and the broken windows.). Paggy is our liaison and stays on the school premises itself. She owns the school and has two other teachers who are happy to help. The children speak Setswana and are now learning to speak English as their second language. The project's three biggest needs this term are the safety where the school will have to get a fence to protect the teachers and learners, as well as to protect things within the school. The second biggest need the school has is educational toys, this will be needed so that children can learn in a practical and playful way to gain more knowledge, as well as to learn by playing in a fun way. The third biggest need for the school will be that the children need a learning space that suits their needs by improving the class' infrastructure and this will be done by fixing the holes in the floors, to fix the broken windows, and varnish the class so that the children can be proud of their class and feel safe inside and so that they can benefit most from the classroom, the safety of the school, and the learning materials they are going to be able to play with.

Happy Hearts

Happy Hearts is an NWU SRCS project that is situated at 25 Galant Street in Promosa. From the outside, this place may appear to be small, but upon entering – the story is quite different. Happy Hearts gives the opportunity for the elderly in this community (approximately 60 years and older) to gather and socialize there during the week – they prefer to speak Tswana, but they are also open to speaking English. As of this moment, the group is comprised of 54 (active) participants that would really like to connect and socialize with members (same age) in their community. Their schedules were usually packed with events (from Mondays through to Thursdays) – unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this has drastically changed. Due to challenges in transportation as well – the new gathering day will be mainly on Wednesdays. There is a social worker (Rebecca) for Happy Hearts to ensure that these vulnerable adults of society get protected (Rebecca is also my liaison person).

Die Wilge (Meisies)

The project's name that belongs to the North-West University (NWU) is Die Wilge Girls. Die Wilge High School is a school for special learners found at 10 Rocher street, Potchefstroom. The school is for learners who are struggling to learn, and at this school, they will get the much-needed help. This project is unique because most of the learners have problems with discipline and are then referred to Die Wilge High School from the Primary School because they are not understood. The girls' hostel consists of 12 to 18-year-olds, and the number increases as the learners' parents have the finances to put them in school at the beginning of the year. There are +- 33 girls in the hostel. Conette Shutte, a dedicated teacher who wants to make a difference, is the Liasion person. She can be contacted by 083 449 4485. She is the person to call and make all the arrangements regarding the hostel. When working with the girls, communication should be in English. The three most significant needs of the project for 2022 is hygiene (sanitary products), mental development with religious activities and making the hostel rooms feel homier.

Die Wilge Boys project is owned by the North West University working together with the improvement school located in Potchefstroom along the N12, opposite the technical school for children with learning disabilities and concentration problems. The High School which is an LSEN school, consists of about 650 children between the ages of 13 to 17, these learners come mostly from less privileged households where they receive little to no attention and stimulation not. The project works in connection with a boys' residence of Die Wilge High School, majority of these children come from low-income households. The success of the project is determined by how they grow in who they are and what they want to become, it's also determine by what they learn during this project. This project helps to build their self- esteem and helps them to believe more in themselves that they are not define by their condition but by who they choose to be. It will teach them about important life choices and how they can become everything they want to become. Sport development is very important in the project since they are High School boys who are teenagers, it also helps to stimulate them and 1teamwork encourage and help with communication. The project will focus on learners living in the residence, where there is approximately over 70 learners. The language preferred for this project is English because most of the learners speak English. The significance of this project is that it focuses on helping children, building them to become the better person of themselves, teaching them that the changes they want to see is hidden within them. What makes the project unique is that it help learners who struggle academically to achieve something bigger in life. The three biggest needs for this project is basic lifestyle skills development, sports development and also cognitive skills development. During this project we will also work together with Conette Schutte which is our liaison person for this project. She will help us with admin purposes and will also help with building relationship with the learners of the High School

Keagile

The project is done by Ratau Lebone men’s residence. The project that our residence has this year is Keagile Primary school, which is in Ikageng, Potchefstroom. The school consists of 144 children, between the ages of eight and ten, that are currently in Grade 3, and the project liaison is Mrs. Katlego Mpondo. It is a child and youth development project that involves numerous basic needs that must be fulfilled. The residence has had this project since late 2019. The main language of communication for this project is English, although Setswana is preferred for internal communication within the school. The purpose of this project initiative is to teach the youth about the importance of the environment and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which entails how to stay safe in terms of good health and hygiene, as well as what to do in the situation of affected peers, in terms of the coronavirus pandemic. What makes our project stand out is that kindness can be taught directly and each learner has the ability to individually express their strengths and abilities, as the learners are at the age where they acknowledge such emotional attributes. The most important needs for our project this year are environmental awareness, general health and hygiene, and cognitive and creative development.

Tshepo Primary

Rising of the future

Rising of the Future is a pre-school in Ikageng. It is a very small pre-school, and it is in Yvonne own yard. This is Kasteel third term at the school. The kids that also attend the pre-school is a small group, but we are hoping that will change soon. There are a lot more boys than girls and the children are between the ages of 0 to 5 years of age, so far there are 15 children. Yvonne doesn’t do all the work by herself she does have a lady that assists her from time to time. The school is in a small shack in Yvonne yard which is not very spacious. The children learn in both English and Setswana but are more fluent in Setswana and are predominantly taught in it, but since that is a language, I can speak it as well makes communication easier for them and they engage more. There school doesn’t have mattress for the children there is only this one single bed at the corner which is not enough and a bit risky because the children can easily fall of the bed. Yvonne also feeds the children through out the day and says that the vegetable garden does help with this. Community members also come around and help wherever they can. The school is not big enough to have separate classes so that the babies don’t distract or disturb the older ones. They don’t have enough books where the children can also start working and write what they learn throughout the day. The school really needs help with the toilet and the potties for the little ones. The tap in the toilet is broken so they can’t wash their hands there and the basin is way too high for them to reach so they need a highchair that can elevate them. It is a very lively school, and it radiates from the kids and the teacher as well which is amazing. The school needs recycling bins as well because there isn’t a bin where they throw away this. The jungle gym needs to be repaired and the gates need to be installed around the yard. You can see the potential in all those children and how badly they want to learn and tap into that potential, so I think that is one of the best things that school has compared to all the others.

Mmabane

Mmabana is a SRCS-project of Hombré Men’s Residence. The project is a nursery school in Ikageng about 20 minutes outside Potchefstroom. It is a small kindergarten with about 10-20 children. The ages of the children range from 1-3 years old. The school consists of only one classroom, and it is a few minutes from the teacher’s residence. The name of the liaison person at the project is Hilda and Hombre residence has been working on the project for 3 years. The nursery school needs urgent attention in terms of upgrading the facility to ensure that the pupils can receive the best possible education. Other infrastructure needs in this regard is the installment of electricity, fixing the roof of the school building and providing the classroom with the necessary educational equipment and/or toys. At the school the main languages there are communicated and educated in are Tswana, as well as English.

BM Choabi

Over de Voor Manskoshuis se projek is BM Choabi. Die skakelpersoon by BM Choabi se naam is Beverly.

Khayalethu Village

Khayalethu Village is a NWU project in Ikageng that houses 19 elderly people in the age range of 58-91 years ,some people are disabled some are not. The preferred language for SRCS interactions is Setswana .The residence includes five bedrooms, a large kitchen, a small dining room (eating area) ,a bathroom and a covered outdoor area. There is a shortage of beds and mattresses. There are also some residents with epilepsy who have to sleep on the floor due to the lack of equipment to let them sleep safely on the bed. The residents have all the essentials they need but there is still a great need for infrastructure, stimulation, furniture and relationship building. Income in the home is limited and food like fruit and vegetables can become very expensive .The elderly spend most of their day sitting outside under the canopy and receive little to no stimulation. There are wonderful nursing staff who work in shifts .They work together to take care of the residents, to wash their clothes, bedding and take care of their everyday needs. Jane is the liaison person ,she is very concerned about her residents and she is more than happy to receive any sort of assistance in the home. Khayalethu Village's main needs are infrastructure, active relationship building and stimulation.

Little Angels

Little Angels is ‘n kleuterskool geleë in uitbreiding 6 van Ikageng, Potchefstroom. Hierdie jaar is Wag-‘n-Bietjie se 2de jaar betrokke by Little Angels.

Katlego Day Care Centre

Katlego’s Daycare is a pre-school situated in Ikageng and under the care of Wanda ladies’ residents. This is a new project and has only been under the care of the NWU for the last two years. There are currently 10 children under the age of 5 attending the school every day Each child is provided with one meal per day. The Liaison person, Anna, really tries to look after all the children, but because of all the needs, there is little time left for creative and cognitive development. The biggest need for the project is training for the teachers, infrastructure for the playground, and basic needs such as diapers. Children at the project are mostly Monolingual and can only speak Setswana or Sesotho. Something that really makes this project stand out is the energy of the children and the love Anna has for the children in her daycare. Each child is a special and unique individual that deserves a bright future. As Wanda Ladies residents we strive to better these children’s teaching environment.

Gopalang

The project “Gopalang” is a day-care centre situated in Ikageng, Potchefstroom, and Karlien Ladies Residence is currently involved with this project and this is their third year working with them. Gopalang is functioning as a mini preschool where meals are provided by JAM (2 meals a day) and where overall educational care is provided. This project is part of Bafenyi Trust programme. The liaison person, who is the direct link to the project, is Ms Martha and she is the head teacher at and founder of the day-care. She started Gopalang – on her own, from scratch - with only a dumping site to work with and this makes the project extremely significant. She saw a need in her community and decided to take a bold step. She changed a dumping site into what most of these children see as their homes because they a major and critical part of their lives is brought through here. There are a total of 2 staff members at the day-care. There are about 15 children at this project and they are between the ages of 0 and 6. Their language of communication is Setswana even though Ms Martha understands some Afrikaans and English. Some of the most prominent needs of the project includes sanitation, fencing around the school as well as a net/canopy for shade.

Thulani Day Care

Eureka Pre School

The Project Klawerhof got now for 3 years in a row is Eureka which is a Nursery school located in Promosa. It consists of children from the ages 1 to 5 years old. The children in the classroom are normally 30 in a maximum. The children are Setswana , English and Afrikaans speaking but the school teaches in Afrikaans though the teachers can communicate to learners in all three languages. The Liason person which we will be working with this year is Joyce, she describes Eureka as her purpose. Currently the school is a crisis of having a safe environment for the children and is need of better facilities in the classroom to make the education they give to the children a little more enhanced. The children have not been attending the school due to the fact that the school does not have proper fencing which is unsafe. The teachers are willing to go an extra mile for the children but it becomes difficult when they cannot make it a safe environment for them. The school also has no playing area which is discourages as children always need a moment or two to unwind by playing outside and having fun. The school has a lot of potential and if obstacles like safety are tackled it can grow back again. I personally think what makes Eureka special is the fact that it is multilingual which is something the university also believes in.
